On April 15th of this year, I wrote this post detailing why I believed that Judge Mike Anderson was a much better candidate for Harris County District Attorney than his opponent. I also detailed how Kristin Guiney, Joe Vinas, Ryan Patrick, and Renee Magee were the best candidates for Judge in their respective races. Yesterday, the Houston Bar Association released the results of its poll on the candidates’ qualifications for office, which showed that I am not alone in my opinions.

If I did my math correctly (which is not a given, since I am an Aggie), 1720 members of the Houston Bar Association voted in the poll. Those who voted in the contested races were given the option of selecting one of four answers in response to a candidate’s qualifications. Those options were: Not Rated, Not Qualified, Qualified, orWell Qualified. Given the fact that only lawyers who are members of the Houston Bar Association voted in the poll and that the majority of those members do not practice criminal law, it is not much of a surprise that the most commonly selected answer for the criminal races was “Not Rated.”

On Tuesday evening, months after a plea deal was cut saving an immigrant from possible deportation, there is still a quiet storm inside the Harris County DA’s office over it.

It was such a good deal, it’s never been offered before or since, and the defense attorney has connections to the DA’s BAT van scandal.

This really seems like a minor case — a gas station employee sold an inspection sticker to an undercover cop without insurance. It’s a crime. He admits he did it. But he got a good plea deal and it so upset some senior prosecutors who say it violated policy, the DA was forced to weigh in on it herself.

A man with a long criminal history led police on a wild, high-speed chase, then he was shot. He’s now locked up in jail, serving his sentence, but some police officers say he didn’t get enough time behind bars.

The chase actually happened earlier this month, and a plea deal was struck quickly. But the sentence has some critics and the district attorney’s office is trying explain what happened.

Law enforcement describes Mark Ames, 23, as a career criminal. Some say the punishment does not fit the crime.

Two weeks ago, Ames led Houston police on a short chase through southwest Houston. It ended at an apartment complex near Court Glen and Bissonnet with the pursuing officer shooting Ames in the shoulder after he allegedly assaulted the officer. Ames pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of attempting evading arrest, a state jail felony, and was sentenced to one year in the Harris County Jail.
